SIR - Previous reports of postal voting corruption in the Midlands and the north of England resulting in police arrests and court cases, multiple postal vote applications from the same addresses, and even senior politicians questioned are just some of the reasons why there should be a more cautious approach to total postal voting.

I agree with Jim Evans (Letters, April 19) that until such time that much tighter controls than those existing at the present time are put in place, the wishes of the local New Labour politicians who, for whatever reason, call for total postal voting, must be resisted.
