Sir - The current spat between Labour and the Tories over the level of parking charges in Worcester is an example of faulty Liblabcon and local authority management thinking. They do not understand that car parking is a service to the public, not a cash cow for the council.

Making city centre car parks free for three hours during the day, and completely free in the evening would make visiting the city centre more convenient for the public and provide a boost for businesses - a benefit for the many, rather than perks for the few.

The council would lose revenue, but the latest revelations about £3,000 of our money being spent on an operation for a Chief Fire Officer are just part of a series of stories about public sector management waste. The high wages at the top and the money squandered on inappropriate projects show that there is clearly plenty of scope for savings.

If there is money available for perks, fat cat executive salaries and propaganda material like the Worcester Life magazine, the problem is clearly one of attitude, not resource.

Providing plenty of free parking would be a great benefit to the majority of people. There might be a loss of revenue, but the council should just reduce its expenditure accordingly. When executives and councillors are looking at where to save money, they should look in the mirror first.
