K. Hemming (Letters, 4.3.'14) seems to have got himself into such a tizzy over the EU that it may be unwise to risk a further rise in his blood pressure by responding.

However, I will try to be gentle. Could I, with considerable hesitation and trepidation, simply highlight the fact that millions of people in this country believe that it is in our best interests to be a member of the EU, imperfect and flawed though it is? They are neither "grovelling lap-dogs" nor "traitors", and this is not an either/or question: it is not anti-British to be pro-EU, and it should not be anti-EU to be pro-British.

Mr Hemming's outrageously intemperate language does his cause no good at all.
