SIR - The building of a waste plant at Norton (Worcester News, December 12) can never be justified because of three key issues.

Firstly, the location. The plant will be situated in a village and 100 people live and work within a radius of 150 yards. This includes 40 residents of a nursing home.

Secondly, the traffic. The plant will generate 550 vehicle movements every day. That is one almost every minute going in and out of the site. The impact of this extra traffic on local roads will be enormous and far-reaching. It will affect everyone who lives not only in Norton and the surrounding area but also those travelling along the southern relief road as waste lorries from the south and west will have to negotiate this single carriageway road, which is extremely congested at the best of times.

Thirdly, the environment. Any method of disposing of local waste which necessitates the unnecessary journeys of thousands of lorries each week across two counties is extremely damaging to the environment. The amount of pollution in terms of carbon emissions and greenhouse gases will be great in a time when we are all called to think about the effect of global warming. Also, Norton will only be sorting waste, not recycling.

Whereas the council may find it cheaper and easier to build only one sorting facility for two counties, the enormous cost of transporting the waste will be paid for by us, the taxpayers.

So we are actually paying for something which will ruin a village community, wreak havoc on our roads and damage our environment.

Elizabeth Morgan, Norton.
