SIR - I refer to the contribution from Tony Eaves (Letters, December 8). True, the majority of UK people were opposed to the illegal Iraq war in regard to mythical weapons of mass destruction.

However, in Parliament, the Tories supported Blair's lunacy. Opposition came from Liberal Democrats, a minority of so-called left-wing Labour MPs and Democrats.

Furthermore, this correspondent brackets the Iraq war with Britain's membership of the European Union. The EU neither supported nor opposed the war because it has no real powers over the sovereignty of member states.

As members of the US and Israeli-controlled Nato, some European states sent token forces to Iraq and Spain and paid a heavy price for doing so.

The leading European power, France, which is a half-hearted member of Nato, refrained from any action and ensured that Germany did not send troops either.

This country did not lose its sovereignty to the European Union, whatever some people may say. Britain surrendered sovereignty when it was involved in an alliance with Israel and the US.

Thus did we become enmeshed in this unwinnable war in Iraq.
