SIR - Road taxes raise £45bn each year, the equivalent of £800 for every man, woman and child, and yet only £37bn is spent on the roads.

And much of that is on useless signs - roadside pub signs, seed shops, new surface signs.

Why then are our roads so appallingly maintained?

The proposal for road charging in order to gain extra revenue is nothing more than yet another tax by this Government. Surely it must run out of ideas for new taxes shortly. Please!

Businesses need to be able to get their goods and services to market easily, reliably and cheaply. A transport system that does not allow this severely restricts the economy.
