SIR – Peter Talbot (Worcester News, December 31) along with Ronnie Lee continue with their claim that the number of vegans is on the rise - thus taking no notice of the Vegetarian Society’s own data which shows there is no increase.

However, Mr Talbot does admit veganism is just a “lifestyle choice”.

Perhaps he and Worcester Veggies and Vegans will now allow the other 99 plus per cent of us the freedom to follow our own lifestyle in peace.

Vegans are in a minority but have the right to a diet of their preference just like everyone else, whatever their race, religion or culture.

Hopefully this is one point we can all agree on.

The propaganda of the vegan movement regularly attempts to portray our livestock farmers as being cruel and wishing to make their animals suffer.

This is a nonsensical argument as any livestock not cared for properly would be totally unproductive.

Likewise, Mr Talbot insists sheep cannot survive in the UK. Although he accepts they do eat grass which grows abundantly here.

He might also take note that they have a fleece, well oiled with lanolin, which keeps them both warm and dry.

Our lamb is in good demand for export and new arrangements to supply British beef to Russia have been agreed this last year.

None of this could have been achieved if our farmers were not producing top quality stock to the highest of welfare standards.
