SIR – Further to the article by Tarik Al Rasheed (Carry on, matron – hospitals are once again looking to qualities of control on the wards) I had to write to back up every word he said about how important the role of the matron is.
I had such brilliant care from Rachel Carter, matron for maternity inpatients during my pregnancy and on the delivery suite when my son was stillborn last November and I will never forget it, or forget how she made the time in her very busy schedule to come to see me personally while I was in labour and help me with some breathing techniques.
The same is equally true of her team and the chaplain at the Worcestershire Royal Hospital Rev David Southall, and I hope that despite the continuing spending cuts these vital roles will remain.
I, my husband and parents could not have got through such a difficult time without all their care and support.
