SIR - The Centre for Economics and Business Research reports the fact that the British economy has plunged to fourth from bottom in the European economic growth league.

So much for Gordon Brown's so-called fiscal prudence. His economic strategy of a debt-fuelled consumer binge, cheap foreign imports, plus an orgy of public spending financed by milking the business economy and pension funds, and a population size the infrastructure simply cannot support, is all adding to this country's dismal performance and outlook.

It's hardly surprising that millions of English are leaving these shores.

With the entry of Bulgaria and Rumania into the EU in 2007 and no prospect of immigration controls being put in place, the future looks bleak for UK subjects.

Quite how this Government imagines the identity card scheme is going to resolve this is a mystery to everyone.

This wretched Government should go to the country as soon as possible.
