SIR - I read in the John Phillpott column regarding the idea that the national anthem God Save Whoever should be replaced with Elgars Land Of Hope And Glory, as it is not relevant to today's populace (Seven Days, December 16).
As an Elgar nut, I agree entirely. Ever since I can remember at international matches - including the 1966 World Cup - the anthem has been sung as "God save the team".
As the Scots, Welsh and Northern Irish have their own, we English should too. Most people who answer your If I Ruled The World feature choose Jerusalem.
So how about, Land Of Hope And Glory as the British and Jerusalem for the English. What do you reckon?
