SIR - Christmas is a time for thanksgiving so let's join with the Turkish, Bulgarian, Kosovan and many other peoples and thank America for sending us Tony Blair and the valuable gift of British citizenship.

Who would do all those jobs we are too idle to do if Mr Blair was not widening the EU to bring us much needed workers to counteract our plummeting population? And do we ever show him any gratitude?

We have just finished paying off our debt to America for loaning us money in the Second World War. No wonder they can't afford a welfare state in the US with us owing them money.

Mr Spielberg is probably too shy to mention America's wartime generosity but the title, Charging Private Ryan springs to mind.

Maybe Britain and America could copy prosperous Germany's economic miracle - and take care to lose the next world war! It seems to make financial sense.

Jim Evans, Worcester.
