SIR – From the report by Tom Edwards (Worcester News , October 29) on Worcester City Council’s choice of whether to offer a food waste collection or not, it should be simple to decide.

Councillor Neil Laurenson’s theory is well meaning but in this day of severe financial restraint it would be a mistake to start a scheme which is so costly to run. £973,000 to set up and another £544,000 every year in recurring costs is just not on with all the cuts elsewhere that have been made.

In view of the fact that Wychavon have decided to axe their scheme in January because of £500,000 annual costs, surely Worcester should learn by that?
