SIR – I was reading the paper and saw the car dealer scam and it sounded just like what happened to me last week.
I put my car on swapz.co.uk and a man named Olaolu Scott messaged me saying he wanted to pay the full price for my car.
I then had an e-mail from Paypal saying that he had put £1,230 into my bank and all I needed to do was transfer £300 to the western union to pay for the surcharge and then I have to get the car sent to Nigeria!
I then had another three saying that they would take legal action against me if it hasn’t been done.
They were all sent from the same e-mail address, which was customerverificationweb@accountant.com.
I then sent all e-mails to spoof@paypal.com which confirmed that it was a phishing e-mail.
I was lucky that I didn’t fall for this scam but some people aren’t as lucky. If you’re not sure you should always contact your bank or whoever you are transferring money through.
