SIR – I am pleased that George Cowley survived to tell another tale when his smoke alarm failed to respond, even though his vegetables boiled dry on the cooker hot plate.
Did he test it I wonder? It isn’t quite so simple for us elderly, but I keep a broom handle handy for the purpose. If one cannot do a test oneself, why not get a friend or neighbour to do it?
