SIR – Mr [Alan] Amos’ hysterical rant over those opposing the proposed lap dancing club, as usual, misses the point (Worcester News, September 21).
To label those who oppose it as hypocrites or bigots just because they don’t subscribe to his view of the world is not a substantive argument and is actually quite insulting to a large number of Worcester residents who may not share his opinion.
Some people, rightly in my view, oppose its location near the Hive.
Others oppose its existence altogether. I don’t like the idea of such a club – describing it as “adult”
entertainment seems a complete misnomer.
It appears to me that such venues appeal to people who have a very strange idea about sex and relationships.
However, taking a pragmatic view, as long as such venues are operated in a controlled (licensed) manner and in appropriate areas then that is perhaps the best solution rather than driving them underground and into the hands of the criminal fraternity.
Mr Amos rightly acknowledges that it is not his duty as a politician to attempt to impose his moral viewpoint on others.
With this in mind, he might be better advised to step back from this particular discussion until he can muster a stronger, more intellectually sound argument to support his views rather than the intemperate use of language and sweeping generalisations with no substantive evidence.
His wild and irrational manner of carrying on does seem more in tune with the Labour party where he now sits rather than the Conservatives who he used to represent.
And if he decides to continue his increasingly eccentric journey into the political long grass, then I am sure there is a place for him either in UKIP or the Respect Party.
In the meantime, hopefully, the relevant provisions of the Police and Crime Act will be adopted by the council to allow the calmer members of the licensing committee to exercise the appropriate control and make a sensible and objective decision reflecting the best interests of Worcester.
