SIR – In February this year Which? magazine reported that local authorities estimated it would cost £12.93 billion to clear the entire road maintenance backlog in the UK.
The House of Commons Public Accounts Committee may have had this in mind when seriously questioning the wisdom and value for money of HS2 which is estimated at £40 billion.
