Sir – In response to the letter R E Tunstall ‘Top show, but where was everyone?’ (Worcester News, September 2). It is so important to support live entertainment in the city.
There is a population of about 100,000 in Worcester and if most bought at least one performance ticket per year, the arts would be in a much more healthy position. I am sure that Worcester Live strives to offer something for everyone and we in turn support them by raising much-needed funds from our annual variety show and a very much reduced membership. In 2002 when the Swan Theatre was threatened with permanent closure, local folk protested and thankfully it was saved, but where are those people now? We have more venues than ever but they need bums on seats to keep them going and whether you are watching or taking part, the euphoria of live performance is wonderful.
Join us from September 19 to 21 and experience the buzz in the auditorium before the curtain goes up and know that you are helping to keep the arts going in Worcester. Find out what’s on and introduce children to the Saturday shows put on most months just for them and help us all to reach the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Swan Theatre in 2015.
Jan Vale
Chairman of the Friends of the Swan Theatre
