SIR – The correspondence in the Worcester News has been quite interesting on the name of Warndon Parish Council.

So I thought I would join in as the ‘man of the spot’.

These are the facts about Warndon Parish Council.

The parish council was inaugurated in 1984 and the new councillors did the only thing possible, they called it Warndon Parish Council.

This was accepted by the city and county councils and the Boundary Commission.

To avoid confusion in committees the city council accepted the parish council’s suggestion that the council estate was known as Warndon and the new build as Warndon Parish.

This was confirmed by the Boundary Commission when the parish was made into two electoral wards –Warndon Parish North and South.

Warndon ‘Villages’ was the developers’ marketing slogan – it nearly became ‘Hamlets’.

The term refers to all the new houses as the parish boundary starts at the canal and finishes at Swinesherd.

Letter writer Steve Davis (Worcester News, September 2) got it right.

During my 20 years as clerk I had many complaints and few compliments. Few residents bother about the parish council – hardly anyone attends the annual open meetings or queries the sum on their council tax bill as long as the grass verges are cut and the landscape kept tidy.

At least that is to the credit of the parish council.

Of course, with hindsight, if the city council had called their big estate St Martin’s, the electoral ward, then there would have been no confusion.

It’s not too late, councillors [Alan] Amos and [Andy] Roberts.
