SIR – Peter Luff MP said that we ought to “embrace”
fracking (Worcester News, August 9).
Rather than focusing on shale gas, the Government should be investing in renewable energy.
In addition to promoting energy conservation measures, far more jobs could be created by developing our on and off-shore wind industries, solar, and eventually tidal.
The International Energy Agency has said with regards to fracking that: “The scale of development can have major implications for local communities, land use and water resources.”
Fracking would also do nothing to help Britain meet its legally binding carbon emissions.
Indeed, Tory county councillor Anthony Blagg, said (despite his continued support for the proposed incinerator at Hartlebury): “The problem with fracking is that it could add to carbon emissions, and certainly won’t help us meet targets.
“It would come at a cost to the environment, so I’d like to see the Government focus on renewable energy more.”
