SIR – Regarding the furore about the badger cull, it seems several questions remain unanswered.
Although millions were spent in the 1990s on a culling programme, this resulted in only a 16 per cent reduction in bovine TB. Why, therefore, was this money not spent on producing a vaccine for the cattle, particularly as one already is available for badger vaccination.
Secondly, it has been established that other wildlife such as. foxes, rabbits, deer, etc, do not carry the disease.
Finally, as badgers mainly live on beetles, worms or larvae for which cowpats are the ideal larder, is it not conceivable they themselves are not being infected?
