SIR – The letter by Councillor Alan Amos (Worcester News, August 23) describing Warndon Villages as a commuter estate lacking the community strengths he says is prevalent in his part of Warndon has to be challenged.
The Villages has various vibrant organisations including two churches – the thriving Evangelical Church in Woodgreen Drive and the ancient grade one-listed St Nicholas Church which serves an ecumenical congregation.
The Lyppard Grange Community Centre offers a wide range of activities, and is where the parish council meets. It gives residents additional local representation, supplementing the work of the city council in making the Villages a desirable place to live.
They also organise an excellent summer fete in July where most of the community groups are involved.
There is also the oversubscribed Lyppard Grange School.
Although Warndon Villages is wealthier than ‘Old Warndon’, there are residents with social needs like many in Coun Amos’ patch.
There are two social housing areas – Swallowfield (includes 86 digital copies and Huxley – and many of the smaller starter homes are privately let to families not able to get housing association accommodation.
Hopefully the Guildhall Labour administration at budget-setting time will note this regarding council grants to Warndon Parishes. Many Labour councillors think everyone’s rich up there!
STEPHEN HODGSON
Councillor Warndon Parish North
