SIR – Now that hopes of a Parkway railway station at Norton have been dashed and that this facility is unlikely, if ever, to become a reality in the next decade perhaps the county transport chiefs could now turn their minds to achieving improvements to the existing rail services.

The business case for Parkway claims to release rail travel demand suppressed by existing journey times, limited train frequency, and the constrained parking capacity of county station car parks.

While it is difficult to comprehend how Parkway would improve journey times or train frequency either to London or Birmingham, an ideal opportunity now exists to meet the passenger demand constrained by lack of station parking within the proposed Sheriff Gate development at Shrub Hill.

A large multi-storey car park at the rear of Shrub Hill station with direct pedestrian access to the station platforms could provide adequate parking for the anticipated latent demand of park and ride rail passengers and we can but hope that this opportunity is realised by the county transportation chiefs.
