SIR – Joy Squires has got a nerve getting on her soapbox complaining about a lack of affordable housing (Worcester News, August 22).

It was the Tories who, having sold off most of this country’s stock of council houses in the 1980s and 1990s, put a block on councils building new council housing.

This was never removed by New Labour in its 13 years in government.

At no time did I hear Joy Squires complain about the disastrous fall in housebuilding under New Labour.

From this, one can only conclude that she supported the New Labour policy of privatisation of rented housing through the mechanism of buy-to-let which soared to record heights under New Labour.

Meanwhile, waiting lists for social housing grew and new housebuilding by councils and housing associations practically came to a halt.

It’s no good attacking Councillor Jabba Riaz for being a Tory carrying out Tory policy.

You expect that from Tories.

It is the betrayal of the founding ideals of the Labour Party by New Labour who abandoned the ideals of the party in exchange for a time in power which changed absolutely nothing and left a deep crisis in housing.
