SIR – Re your story ‘Oxford model is the way to move forward’ (Worcester News, August 20).
The suggestion by Councillor [Mathew] Jenkins to implement a transport plan similar to that used in Oxford is not without merit.
I have experience of both Worcester and Oxford traffic and travel and can confirm that the Oxford park and ride works extremely well.
My own proposal for a solution in a letter a couple of years ago was slightly different – use the railway links.
We have three lines into the heart of Worcester from the north, south west and south east, all crossing major roads.
Rushwick on the A4440 is easily accessible, the proposed Norton interchange station would be the second and the third at Fernhill Heath (where there was a station).
Build park and ride stations at each of these and use a rapid transit system to ferry passengers into Foregate station.
Replace the station at Henwick and add a new one at London Road (A44) and you have seven pick-up and set-down points, so cutting down on cars and no additional buses.
Rail-based rapid transit is the way to go (evidenced by the expansion of the Birmingham Metro and Manchester trams).
As for Coun [Simon] Geraghty’s comment that “it’s nothing compared to London or Birmingham”; well, you can’t compare the traffic levels in the country’s capital and second cities to Worcester. What a ridiculous justification.
