SIR – When county councillor John Smith replaced Derek Prodger and his ‘real vision projects’ as cabinet member for transport and highways, many people felt that perhaps we may have seen the end of mad-cap bus lane schemes costing millions.

But no, with quotes from Coun Simon Geraghty (Worcester News, August 27) suggesting an end to park and ride all based upon costcutting for Mr Geraghty to push through the [David] Cameron/[Eric] Pickles/Smith Tory policy of more cuts in public spending.

This is in addition to another £27 million to be cut from older people’s services.

Well, before Mr Geraghty goes to collect his gong from Mr Cameron, I would ask if the existing park and rides – originally a Tory policy – close, where will all the hundreds of cars that do use the park and ride car parks go?

The figures show that the lowest average of passengers from Perdiswell was 6,920 per week at its highest were 9,391 per week.

As to the Sixways park and ride, even with this service the parking at the hospital is still almost impossible, and by stopping park and ride would mean 1,332 more people weekly arriving by car at the hospital.

So why did they not address the falling numbers using park and ride?

The city centre is frequently gridlocked around City Walls Road, Pheasant Street High Street and the Foregate.

The whole of Lowesmoor could have been developed in the months it has taken for the still ongoing road alterations to be completed – plenty of cones but few workmen.

However, our councillors will still have their grace and favour free parking at County Hall and the Guildhall.
