SIR – I read with interest Neil Watts’ Fair Point column regarding the perceived saturation of Shakespeare plays going on at the moment (Worcester News, August 13).
I think he is right that too much Shakespeare is going on but he should remember that the Bard is a huge national asset and his works are clearly loved otherwise people would not perform or attend them.
But I must point out that other great British artists do exist and are routinely shrugged off for Shakespeare, namely that great comedy operatic duo Gilbert and Sullivan (okay, Gilbert was German but you get my point).
The G&S operas have that great British charm unique to themselves as Shakespeare’s works have to theirs, yet G&S seems to have a reputation of only being for old people or being too twiddly and twee.
How odd given that they are so incredibly funny, topical and entertaining, and I have never seen Blackadder having a pop at them as he did at Shakespeare.
If you are not convinced, some along in October to the Swan Theatre from October 15 to 19 and enjoy our hilarious, yet bone-chilling production of Ruddigore and see that this great duo have a place at the top of the performing arts world every bit as deserved as the Bard himself.
