SIR – Despite another disappointing campaign by Worcestershire County Cricket Club, my wife and I, who are both members, try to support the club by attending as many matches as possible.

Of more concern than the poor results is the behaviour of the groups of male drunks who by their boorish behaviour spoil the enjoyment of the genuine cricket fans.

There have been several occasions during this season when we have had to put up with foul and abusive language by these ignorant individuals who clearly have little love or understanding of the game.

They target boundary fielders with offensive derogatory comments and generally create an ugly and intimidating atmosphere.

At the recent YB40 one-day game against Kent, I witnessed indecent and drunken antics by a group of these undesirables which would surely have resulted in their arrest should police have been in attendance.

The exorbitant prices charged by the club for beer does not seem to deter these people from consuming vast quantities of the stuff, so perhaps the club could consider using some of the profits to employ a police presence at the ground.

The iconic image of New Road as an idyllic venue, overlooked by the magnificent cathedral and surrounded by chestnut trees, is in danger of being impaired unless swift and decisive action is taken.
