SIR – How staggering to see that court translator costs have reached £14 million a year as the legal system is swamped by cases involving immigrants.

Language experts from 259 dialects were drafted in for criminal, civil and family hearings.

This works out at a staggering £37,502 a day, with almost a fifth for immigration or asylum tribunals.

Why should the taxpayer pick up such an outrageous sum like this when this money could be spent wisely elsewhere?

People who choose to live in the UK should make an effort to learn the language or foot the bill themselves.
