SIR – Re MP Robin Walker’s comments regarding the bedroom tax (Worcester News, August 3) saying it was “the right thing to do”.
Three problems come to mind as to why people are complaining about this tax.
First, there are not enough one or two-bedroom houses available for people to downsize to. Second, the number of immigrants coming into this country seem to have priority in the housing market.
Third, the selling-off of council houses by the conservative government under Margaret Thatcher, in which Peter Walker, Robin’s father, was a member, and then not allowing the money to be spent in building more houses created the biggest housing problem.
Housebuilders only want to build three, four and five bedroom houses to maximise their profits to pay shareholders a larger dividend, possibly MPs.
In order to reduce bedroom tax debt, we need to build more one and two-bedroom properties at sensible values for people to buy or rent to increase downsizing.
This would be instead of penalising people for having disablities or not being able to get a a job where jobs do not exist. It’s tough for people today. For example, millions do not have contracts and more supermarkets have selfservice non-operative tills.
