SIR – It’s nice to see a lot of investment is going into New Street station in Birmingham.
It would be even better if we had some investment in Worcester and reintroduced the halt stops in St John’s, possibly Warndon and definitely a station at Norton.
It’s not as though the railways have got no money.
They’ve been grossly overcharging passengers for years. The Victorians left us a good legacy of stations and trains but with our greed we destroyed a third of it by pulling up the tracks and closing stations.
What terrible vandalism that was and it never did save any money.
Putting certain parts out to franchise was a dreadful mistake.
The railways are a great asset and will probably need subsidising always.
We’ve been paying more subsidies to the people who own the franchise than we ever paid to British Rail and that can’t be right.
One day soon when the roads are packed with traffic we will realise what a great asset the railways are.
They should be kept inhouse for the benefit of all the people, not just the few who hold a franchise.
I think foreign governments should be kept out because they are only interested in the money they can make and don’t bother with reinvestment.
After all, it was the British who invented the railways so surely we should keep them and run them for Britain.
