SIR – Last Tuesday I received a letter from Ringway Infrastructure Services indicating that on May 2 they are due to resurface Bittern Road in St Peter’s, Worcester.

Judging by the orange triangles at the junction of the roads leading off my road, I can only assume that they are also planning to resurface its tributaries – Partridge Close, Bullfinch Close and Swallow Close.

I really cannot understand the need to carry out resurfacing on these roads which, apart from one or two small potholes at the junction of each road – which have now been repaired – are perfectly adequate for the type and amount of traffic which uses them.

These roads may appear on a rolling programme of work, but surely each road in any given programme should be inspected visually for its need for resurfacing and not via what I can only assume is a computerised forwardplanning chart.

In the course of driving and cycling throughout the county, I am aware of many roads which should be resurfaced before Bittern Road is even contemplated.

The majority of one particular stretch of road, namely Church Lane, between the Retreat pub and Norton Barracks, is in a disgraceful condition.

The general surface of the road is unpleasant and damaging enough for vehicles and their occupants, let alone for cyclists.

Church Lane is signposted as one of Worcestershire’s cycle routes, and as such one should expect a road surface suitable for this purpose.

Common sense should surely prevail on the decision as to which roads need attention first.
