SIR – In the approaching county council elections it has come to my attention that one or two voters who believe in low taxation and greater efficiency within their council may be tempted to vote for the Conservatives.
Many people are pointing out that by doing so they risk splitting the UKIP vote and letting Labour in, but I don’t see this as a problem for the following reasons:
- UKIP is now attracting increasing numbers of disaffected Labour and Lib Dem voters.
- The local Tories have declared that there is not a europhile among them, putting them sadly at odds with a party whose leader has proclaimed that he will fight tooth and nail to keep Britain in the EU.
- Based on the results at Eastleigh, the Tories can look forward to a future as the third party.
