SIR – You reported that West Mercia Police are to adopt the Tetrapad hi-tech device to help free officers from desk-bound work (Worcester News, April 24).

On the same day it was surprisingly revealed that crime, including violent crime, was falling everywhere in Europe, but particularly in the UK.

This reminds me of the time nearly 20 years ago when Michael Howard, John Major’s Home Secretary, first told an unbelieving nation that crime had started to fall after many decades of increase.

No doubt smarter police methods have had their effect.

But over the same period we have seen the digital revolution produce car immobilisers, better house alarms, surveillance cameras and DNA identification, which all deter crime.

We have also seen £500 video recorders superceded by £25 DVD players, so there is not a lot of profit from stealing electronics nowadays.

So I am very pleased the county council under Adrian Hardman is emphasising job creation, particularly in the high technology fields represented by, for example, the Malvern Science Park.

Not only do we appreciate the jobs to boost the wellbeing of residents, we also now see there are some unexpected benefits to society in general.
