SIR – On Thursday, May 2, we will once again have the opportunity to elect our local councillors.
But is it any wonder that so few of the electorate feel inclined to turn out to vote?
Who in their right mind believes that the selection at random of a name from the ballot paper of a person who they do not know, have not met and from whom they have received no manifesto constitutes any semblance of democracy?
Naturally, politicians have a self-fulfilling belief that it is important for us to exercise our democratic right but the successful candidates will only toe the party line and the views and local issues affecting those they purport to serve will be ignored.
What is the need for party politics at local authority level?
