SIR – I read with great interest your story about the appointment of Dean Ryan as director of rugby at Worcester Warriors (Worcester News, April 18).
One of the glaring quotes is from Bill Bolsover, who is described as chairman of the club’s rugby committee.
In reflective contemplation of the unlamented Richard Hill’s reign, Mr B is quoted as saying: “Richard was head coach, but Dean will be director of rugby.”
He goes on to say: “Now, we will have everything to do with rugby under one person who will be able to make those [recruitment] decisions along with me and the rugby committee”.
So how come only one bloke takes the rap, Bill?
Mr Bolsover goes on to describe how Corin Palmer (nope, me neither) was brought in a year ago to advise on recruitment: “It was a collective decision as to how we would move forward”.
Am I missing something?
Dean Ryan will be in charge (but not really, folks), the people who have fiddled while Rome burned (repeatedly) are all keeping their cushy numbers (save for the unfortunate Mr Hill) and it’s trebles all round in the boardroom.
Anyone remember [Mike] Ruddock, [Andy] Keast, [John] Brain? At the time of writing I have heard nothing from managing director Charlie Little, who previously described Richard Hill (while giving him a contract extension) as “the right man to bring success to Sixways”. Any racing tips, Charlie?
Worcester Warriors have done nothing but bump along the ocean floor (and sometimes dropped beneath it) for years now. Mullan, Benjamin, Kvesic, Carlisle, Claasens, Cowan, Goode even Short all gone or going.
No wonder Cecil Duckworth is losing his patience having backed the place to the hilt.
