SIR – I think it’s outrageous to offer London’s Crossrail out to tender to companies from France, Germany, Spain and even China because they know there is money to be made.

It should be kept in Britain and the money it makes kept in Britain.

Over the years we’ve seen so many mistakes made by different governments over the railways.

Even as far back as Dr Beeching who was put in charge to make the railways pay. He pulled up loads of tracks which today would be a great asset.

I think the railways should be taken back into public ownership.

It could easily be done when each franchise ends.

The railways are a great asset to Britain and will probably always need subsidising.
