SIR – Reading through the nominations for the upcoming county council elections in the city, every seat that Labour expects or hopes to win has a city councillor as candidate, as do the Tories, except for two.
Leading the way are Paul and Lynn Denham.
If this couple win their seats, they will have four council seats between them and the Denham household will be £29,000 richer per annum from allowances.
Andrew Roberts and Marc Bayliss (both Tory), who are paid special responsibility allowances (SRA) by the city council, would be on almost £19,000 each.
Derek Prodger and Simon Geraghty would get £13,000 and £23,700 respectively plus their special responsibility allowance from the county council.
Alan Amos, Pat Agar and Richard Udall (all Labour) and Mike Whitehouse (Tory) would pick up £13,000 apiece.
Are these parties really so bereft of talent that they are unable to find separate candidates for city and county seats, or are they just small controlling cliques masquerading as political organisations enjoying the gravy train of allowances?
