SIR – The letter on March 28 from N S Day, suggesting that Worcester be twinned with Ypres because of the retaking of Gheluvelt by the Worcestershire Regiment in the First World War prompts me to point out that Worcester already has a formal link in that part of Europe arising from the First World War.
In 1921, in support of the British League of Help for the Devastated Areas of France, the city council formally adopted the village of Gouzeaucourt in northern France.
Commendably, money was raised from the public and help was sent in the form of a windmill pump, piping and engineers to install the equipment. Also sent was a bell for their church, food and clothing.
We hope to renew that informal link for the period of commemoration of the outbreak of the First World War in Worcester, and plans are already in progress to contact the village we took under our wing 100 years ago.
