SIR – The Hartlebury incinerator project is an expensive solution to a problem that can be solved by other means, and it should be stopped now.
As the Worcester News reports, rubbish sent to landfill by Herefordshire and Worcestershire has decreased by one third since 2006, showing current measures are working.
These, and the development of other alternative nondamaging technologies are far better options than the Hartlebury incinerator.
Landfill is a major problem, but not an urgent one in terms of the environment.
We have time to develop alternative solutions by increasing recycling and reducing waste by other means, whereas emissions and extra traffic mean the incinerator is a massive potential long-term environmental hazard.
The £120 million price tag is huge, and no doubt an underestimate. The real urgency is the problem of ever-rising costs of landfill tax, which are based on the EU landfill directive.
There is an easier solution; change the legislation in line with UK requirements, and forget the EU.
The whole project is a classic example of why we need less EU interference, and more localism. Councils should not try to force development on the public, and saddle us with major expenditure for the future.
