SIR – Surely C Garner is being somewhat unfair when castigating the Worcester News for supporting the ramblings of John Phillpott and George Cowley.

Mr Phillpott performs two invaluable functions.

He supports the fantasies of the angry old man tendency, exaggerating wrongs and ensuring they never see the essential privilege most of us have living in our wonderful communities.

No need for them to move out of their compound of misery and despair.

Having seemingly enjoyed similar life experiences to that of Mr Phillpott I find reading his curmudgeonly rants is a fantastic corrective.

When finding myself in agreement with him I know it’s time to look in the mirror and say how privileged I have been to live in such a wonderful place at such a time.

Keep writing John, the depressive party needs you.

As for George, I have always taken his writings to be pure satire, a element sadly for the most part missing in the news – our very own mini Worcester Private Eye.

I’m a fan, always expecting (and sometimes detecting) a change in philosophical direction; even if his geographical knowledge is somewhat dubious.

Well done the Worcester News for ensuring fact is balanced with fantasy!
