SIR – What an utter mess has been made of the flower beds up Hylton Road and the island at the bottom of the Bull Ring, St John’s.

All of these up until a few days ago were a joy to behold – primulas in many colours in full bloom with weeks of beauty ahead.

Firstly – they cut by a third the size of the beds in the island to ensure less plants are required – now, after pulling up all the flowers very early, they have filled the beds with wood chippings. Whoever thought up that idea is no gardener.

The riverside now looks ugly.

The troughs of flowers along the railings were stopped years ago – then – no more hanging baskets down by the river – now these awful beds of chippings – what next?

Take all the grass up and cover it all with concrete! It wouldn’t surprise me.
