SIR – On March 29 the Worcester News published a press release from Worcester City Council which celebrated a “funding boost”
by the Arts Council ‘£130,000 boost will help civil war project’.
I would like to congratulate the Commandery and the City Art Gallery and Museum for their success in winning this award.
It is big news and a real lifeline for both these local organisations.
However, this one-off grant only goes some way towards replacing the huge budget cuts which have already been made.
The Joint Museums Service has suffered a £150,000 a year reduction in their funding from Worcester City Council to date.
The Conservative administration also requires further recurrent savings so that by April 2015, £200,000 will have been removed from Worcester’s remaining museums every year, making it difficult to provide a decent service.
Despite the press release, we have to wonder how much does the Tory cabinet really value Worcester’s heritage and culture?
