SIR – As someone who has visited the Western Front on a number of occasions,I have read with interest of the preparations to commemorate the centenary of the beginning of the First World War in 2014.
Given the pivotal role played by the 2nd Battalion Worcestershire Regiment in the re-taking of Gheluvelt during the first Battle of Ypres when Sir John French was moved to say “England and the Empire had been saved from a great disaster”, would it not be possible for Worcester to be twinned with Ypres?
I have no idea of the costs or intricacies involved in twinning but, surely, this would be a wonderful way to commemorate the part played by the men of Worcestershire in the conflict.
