SIR – Re your story and subsequent editorial (Worcester News, March 14) in which Worcester MP Robin Walker admits he has “a mountain to climb” to keep his seat at the next general election.
Firstly, how refreshing to see a politician of any party being open and honest and admitting things will be tough.
I’m not really what you would describe as politically aware but I know what I need an MP to be and questions I ask myself when I’m in the polling station are these:
- Will the person I vote for care about the people they will serve?
- Will he/she help us when we ask for help?
- Will he/she have the backbone to argue against their bosses when they see national policies affecting their constitutents?
- Will that person be approachable and easily available to us all?
In our MP I think we have a person who we can say meets all of the criteria I set on polling day to all of the above.
I run a small charity based in Worcester and have always found Mr Walker to be very helpful.
He’kll do what he can and be honest about what he can’t do.
I would agree with your editorial, he does fight for local Worcester people and I get the impression, if given a chance at the next election, he will carry on doing so.
My opinion would be to vote for a person who has our interests at heart rather than a party as after all the national hullaballo of election day dies down, ordinary people who live here in Worcester are left with local issues to deal with on a daily basis.
It is up to us to choose a person wisely based upon local issues, not national party politics.
