SIR – I agree with G B Dipper (Worcester News, February 20),I’m looking forward to [David] Cameron being voted out.
However, our reasons differ. Contrary to Mr Dipper, I am pleased that a portion of the national budget (albeit a meagre amount) goes on foreign aid and development.
It would be a sad world in which richer countries gave nothing to those in dire poverty.
The organisation I work for made recommendations last year which were adopted by the UN Human Rights Council, encouraging states to do more to lower maternal mortality – those deaths of women related to pregnancy or child birth that are preventable with access to better healthcare and family planning.
The UK did contribute towards this goal in 2012.
Does Mr Dipper really begrudge funding like this?
No one in international development could pretend there aren’t difficult decisions and indeed mistakes.
We should spend judiciously and sustainably, and be vigilant for corruption.
But Mr Dipper’s view was that foreign aid should stop altogether and that is meanspirited.
It’s a kind of Nimbyism in reverse – only in my backyard.
