SIR – David Barlow’s letter (Worcester News, February 20) shows the difficulty the pro-EU lobby has in making a case.

Despite his bluster, he clearly fails to see the bigger picture.

Some countries might benefit from being in the EU, but not the UK, which pays a lot in for little return.

We run a deficit with the EU, but we do not need to be a member to trade with it and the rest of the world.

We are one of the world’s largest economies, with a population bigger than that of South Korea or Canada, or of the whole of Scandinavia.

Unlike many EU members, in economic, geopolitical and even military terms, we do not need the EU.

Leaving might be complex, but the EU is facing a nightmare scenario of dealing with collapsing economies in the south, and the new arrivals, Bulgaria and Romania.

We would be better off outside, operating and trading on our own terms, not getting dragged down by the EU’s problems.

The money we currently waste on the EU should be saved, or spent meeting our own taxpayers’ needs.
