These people do not pay council tax SIR – Re the headlines such as ‘We are all in this together’, ‘Council cutbacks’, ‘Loss of jobs’ and ‘Student housing crackdown’ which I have seen in the Worcester News at various times.
I wonder how many of your readers are aware of the fact that students and their landlords pay no council tax.
It is estimated that there are 750 independently-owned student houses in Worcester, with an average of five students per house.
If these houses were in band C of the council tax scale, 750 x £1,290 equals just under £1 million pounds, which would then be collected and could be used by the council to offset some of the cuts mentioned above.
It hardly seems to me that “we are all in this together”
when I have to pay my council tax and these landlords and students get the same services and amenities free.
