FOOD and beverage apprentices Jessica Smith and Jack Fletcher met Worcester MP Robin Walker as part of his fact-finding visit to local businesses during National Apprenticeship Week. Both Miss Smith, who is 16, and 19 year old Mr Fletcher are with HIT Training and working towards their level two intermediate apprenticeships at the Pavilion in the Park in Worcester, a family-run restaurant owned by Rob and Sarah Thompson.

Miss Smith said: "Mr Walker was very interested in our apprenticeships and asked us lots of questions about our studies and work experience.” The visit was organised by Worcestershire Training Providers Organisation and enabled the MP to meet local employers and to discuss the positive impact of apprenticeships on both learners and businesses.

Mr Walker added: "As a strong supporter of apprenticeships, it was great to visit the Pavilion in the Park after its recent challenges with flooding to meet two very enthusiastic and impressive young apprentices. They were both clearly enjoying their work and it was evident that the business and the training company were working with them to support them and to enable them to achieve their aims.

“As a member of the business, innovation and skills select committee, I am keen to ensure that we are enabling as many young people as possible to pursue a broad range of opportunities to fulfil their potential and I am keen to work with local businesses to ensure they have whatever support they need to create such opportunities. It is fantastic that the number of apprenticeships have more than doubled under this Government but it is equally important that the quality continues to improve."
