FIRE crews had to be alert to douse down a car after it caught fire while parked in a busy Worcester car park.

The Fiat was found on fire at about 4.20pm yesterday on the fourth floor of the St Martin's Gate multi-storey car park.

Two fire engines were called to the scene before a shopper eventually returned to her burnt-out car.

Eyewitness Gillian Hadfield, aged 32, of Warndon, Worcester, said she had just parked when she saw smoke billowing out of the bonnet and dialled 999.

She said: "There was a little smoke coming out from under the bonnet. I thought it had just overheated, but then I realised there was nobody stood near it."

Fire service spokesman Alec Mackie said: "There was a fire in the engine compartment, although the exact cause is unknown.

"Two pumps went to the scene to deal with the fire, which is not being treated as suspicious.

"The lady who owned the car had been out shopping."
