TO lose by just one point against Bath in our opening game was far from ideal and there were a lot of sour faces in training yesterday.
We were desperate to get off to a good start this season with a home win and it takes a couple of days to get over a game like that.
But there are plenty of positives to take from the match and there is a good vibe in the squad going into this Saturday’s trip to Leicester Tigers.
I thought we kicked really well at the weekend and stuck to the game plan. The players were fully committed and everybody was revved up for the game, everybody wanted to win and the attitude was there.
However, it was a tough match for us. We wanted a forward-motivated game and we just couldn’t get into it because Bath kicked so much.
We did lead 15-6 but had a try disallowed because of a forward pass and it spoiled our momentum and I think that showed in the second-half.
It would have been a different story had we been a bit more clinical. If we had held the ball for 40 seconds at the end we would be talking about a win but as it happened we let the ball bounce in our own half and they took advantage.
We also conceded 16 penalties which is unacceptable at any level of rugby and that is ultimately why we lost the game.
Although I was shown a yellow card during the first-half, I thoroughly enjoyed running out in a Worcester shirt for the first time.
I felt fresh with a spring in my step and it was good to get the first home game under my belt, the atmosphere was noisy and it was nice to play in front of the home crowd. The fans were good but it was disappointing for them as the game wasn’t great in terms of attacking rugby.
I was one of five who made their debuts and I was pleased with how the other new players, like David Lemi and Josh Matavesi, performed with the way they were getting around the park.
It is important to remember that we had only played three games together before Bath so there’s a lot to take on board — we are by no means the finished article — and we have a lot to work on throughout the season. There’s no direct pressure on those guys but they know what they have got to do.
It’s exciting times at Warriors, and I know I’ve said it a lot, but we are moving in the right direction.
Next up we face Leicester at Welford Road and I think that will suit our style. They have been a quality side for as long as I can remember, have got a big set of forwards and are well drilled.
We are likely to be the underdogs but that’s not a bad position to be in.
